Timothy Leary at his home in Beverly Hills, California, 1994

Dr. Timothy Leary was born Oct. 22, 1920, and died May 31, 1996.
That makes him 74 years old at the time of this picture.

A brilliant mind, with a Harvard education, this man was heavily into experimenting with hallucinogenic drugs and exploring the potential of untapped areas of the human brain.
He was extremely opinionated and shared his ideas in books and articles most of which are widely available.

Previously a Catholic, his opinion on religion is the most facinating one I've heard. This is an excerpt from an article in Psychology Today,1994, written by Bill Mosely.

"I am a humanist. That is a basic religion of humanity, obviously. It goes back to Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, the Greeks, Socrate. All of the reformation stuff, the Renaissance was humanism, humanism, humansim. America is based on humanism. That is my religion.

I assume as did Emerson, and every other mystic that divinity lies within, and don't look to the chapel or the book that you find in your motel drawer. Look within, and you have to look within with other people; it's a team sport. Religion is a team sport. It's got to be done eye to eye and soul to soul.

It's your responsibility to learn how to operate your own soul. That's a new concept. You have to accept the responsibilty of the divinity. There just ain't no one out there or up there. You've got to accept the fact that within you and around you in the brains and coming through the eyes of your friends, that's how you're going to find it.
